For anyone seeking answers to education-related topics based on current law and practice, the Illinois Association of School Boards continues to offer a popular reference book: Illinois School Law Survey. An updated 18th edition is now available in print and digital format, reflecting the impact of legislative changes and relevant court cases from as of January 1, 2024.

The book’s question-and-answer format allows readers to find answers to the commonly asked questions facing or posed by school administrators, principals, boards of education, and the general public. Plus, a listing of statutes, rules, and court cases on which the answer is based provides key sources for readers wanting to research further.

With each print book purchase, you gain access to a dynamic digital version of the entire book. This isn't just a replica of the print book, but a powerful, keyword-searchable tool that puts the information you need at your fingertips. It also includes links to cited court cases and federal laws, Illinois statutes, rules, and more.

The publication presents more than 1,600 Q&A entries in 27 chapters. Topics cover school board powers, elections and referendums, student issues, records retention and access, student expression, teacher employment, liability concerns managing school funds, and many more. In addition to an extensive Table of Contents, a Quick Reference Index offers a detailed listing of more narrow topics and where they are discussed in the book.

Illinois School Law Survey was originated by the late Brian A. Braun, an attorney with the firm of Miller, Tracy, Braun, Funk & Miller, Ltd., from 1983 to 2023. Prior to that, Brian A. Braun was an attorney on the staff of the Illinois Association of School Boards.

The book is now authored by Brian’s son, David J. Braun, an attorney with the firm of Miller, Tracy, Braun, Funk & Miller, Ltd., since 2007. He is a member of the Illinois Council of School Attorneys and an adjunct professor in the College of Education in the Educational Administration and Foundations Department at Illinois State University.
